Dear Jeff,

Sleep System Testimonial:

“My son, James, was diagnosed with autism before the age of 3. I started attending conferences all over North America, getting newsletters from all over the world and became trained in teaching modalities that showed us a good percentage of progress. James is now 11. “Over the years, we made progress, but James still had a sleep disorder and a rash on his arms and legs that we couldn't do anything about. I tried everything. For the sleep, I tried massage, Reiki, herbal remedies (melatonin), and even painted his room blue for a calming effect. Of course, the doctors were prescribing medicines throughout the years. “Yet every night, this child would get up and roam all over the house, turning on TVs with loud volume, turning on lights, and going into his brothers’ rooms and wake them up. Needless to say I was struggling with lack of sleep myself. It disrupted the entire household. “I decided to try a Nikken mattress pad on his bed. It still amazes me. For the FIRST TIME IN EIGHT YEARS, I WOKE MY SON UP! That was almost two years ago, and he continues to sleep every night, medicine-free! His body is now doing what it is supposed to be, and he is now making more progress through the day because of this good sleep he is getting. He is also now COMPLETELY medicine-free through the school day, as well! “He has had other positive effects from Nikken products, and if I didn't experience this myself, I would have never believed it. The best part was how non- invasive all of these products are. Autism is like a puzzle, and you are always seeking the right pieces that fit. Well, I definitely found some of the biggest pieces to help my son. It didn't cure him, but his quality of life is so much better. And isn't that ultimately what we all desire?”

Tip Of The Week:

Avoid Factory Farmed Salmon

A new study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences makes a convincing case that salmon farms are killing off wild salmon."Before we knew there were potential problems," said Martin Krkosek, a doctoral student at the University of Alberta who was lead author of the study. "Now it is very clear we have severe problems here." The study found that salmon farms are massive breeding grounds for parasites known as sea lice. The parasites then concentrate in rivers and streams and kill the young salmon who do not have scales to protect themselves. Most salmon farms are located in Canada, where 280 salmon farms produce about 96,000 tons of salmon each year. About 70 percent goes U.S. consumers. The study, which confirms previous findings, is the most comprehensive to date. Responding to this study and similar past study results, Andrew Thomson, Canada's government head of Pacific fisheries, said, "We need to do more research on it." Farmed salmon is also known to have higher levels of PCBs than wild salmon.

Green up your home. Part 2

9 cleaning products to ditch, plus safer, natural alternatives.

Replace these common housecleaning products with safer, natural alternatives.

Nobody loves housecleaning. But when you learn about the potentially hazardous chemicals lurking in many common cleaning products, you'll like this chore even less. many mainstay products can leave you with a hangover or headache, eye irritation, rashes or respiratory distress. As more data becomes available about their potential long term health consequences, including a weakened immune system, reproductive disorders, neurological damage, and cancer, many of the products that now pass muster may be deemed too dangerous for home use, predicts Annie B Bond, author of Home Enlightenment (Rodale, 2005). Swapping out a few of the less than healthy chemicals cleaners in favor of ecofriendly versions will ensure that your home not only looks good, but it also has a healthy glow.

Carpet Cleaners/Spot Removers

Better known as the gas that powers your backyard grill, propane is a common solvent in carpet cleaners and upholstery spot removers. But when petrochemicals leach from septic systems into groundwater, "that's a human health problem," says Wendy Heiger-Bernays, Ph.D., assistant professor in the department of environmental health at Boston University's School of Public Health.

Safer Alternative:Hydrogen Peroxide;

It's not perfect - hydrogen peroxide can irritate the eyes and nose and does have a bleaching effect, and its certainly dangerous to ingest. But it also biodegrades into hydrogen and oxygen, the elements in water, making it less harmful to the environment.

Floor Cleaners

Not only can ethylene glycol monobutyl ether - the ingredient common in floor cleaners, varnishes, and latex paint - irritate your eyes, nose, and throat, but is also has been linked to cancer in rats.

Safer Alternative:Vegetable-based surfactants

Unlike standard detergents, vegetable based surfactants use biodegradable oil derived from plants - including soy, coconut, and corn - to soak up grease and dirt. Another plus: Green cleaners often forego phosphates, a detergent additive that suffocates freshwater ecosystems.

Furniture Polish

Furniture polish made of petroleum distillates such as naphtha are central nervous system irritants that can leave you feeling dizzy, nauseated, or headache, says Bond. BR>
Safer Alternative: Carnauba Wax

Made from the waxy coating on a palm leaf, it's a natural, nontoxic emollient that gives wood surfaces a nice, smooth luster.
