Dear Jeff,
Quick Testimonial:
"After a work
accident I tried
everything to get comfortable - especially when I
slept. I constantly tossed and turned to find a better
position. The Nikken Sleep System has made a huge
difference and now I have restful sleep every night.
Nothing has worked quite like this - it's amazing.

Growing Organic

tab at the bottom of the page.
You do not have to be a farmer to grow organic.
More and more ordinary gardeners are converting to
organic practices for the purposes of benefiting their
own health and that of the environment at the same
time. organic gardening does not require a vast
knowledge of complicated procedures or endless
different tools. It simply means gardening naturally. it
involves a basic understanding of the world that
exists within your garden.
However, organic gardening is much more than a way
of growing plants without chemical sprays and
artificial fertilizers. It recognizes that there are
complex systems within the natural world that need
to be respected and complied with. That does not
mean producing less or that your produce will be
inferior to plants that are grown in a conventional
garden. Quite the opposite: by using natural
methods, you will produce healthy, flourishing plants,
a vibrant garden ecosystem, an enticing habitat for
wildlife, and food that is delicious, and free of
chemicals.
Whatever you are planting-from ornamental shrubs
and roses to vegetables and herbs in boxes-there are
a few simple principles involved. The first is to ensure
that you reduce the demands placed on your garden
(and, in particular, the soil) by regularly replacing
organic matter. you also need to protect seeds while
they germinate, using natural methods, and make
sure that they have plenty of water and sunlight.
The final step is ensuring that pests and diseases are
controlled in a way that encourages health and
balance in your gardens ecosystem.
One of the mainstays of organic gardening is the
compost heap. This created organic matter that can
be reintroduced into the soil to keep it nourished and
to encourage the growth of natural, healthy bacteria
and other microorganisms that play an important role
in the health of your soil and, throught that, of your
plants. Be prepared to use a little manual labor in
your organic garden. You cannot rely on sprays and
chemicals to do the work for you, so you will need to
be vigilant about digging, seeding, pruning, weeding,
watering, recycling, composting, and covering. The
results will be will worth the effort, and your garden
will flourish year after year.

9 cleaning products to ditch, plus safer, natural alternatives.
Replace these common housecleaning products with
safer, natural alternatives.
Nobody loves housecleaning. But when you learn
about the potentially hazardous chemicals lurking in
many common cleaning products, you'll like this chore
even less. many mainstay products can leave you
with a hangover or headache, eye irritation, rashes
or respiratory distress. As more data becomes
available about their potential long term health
consequences, including a weakened immune system,
reproductive disorders, neurological damage, and
cancer, many of the products that now pass muster
may be deemed too dangerous for home use,
predicts Annie B Bond, author of Home
Enlightenment (Rodale, 2005). Swapping out a
few of the less than healthy chemicals cleaners in
favor of ecofriendly versions will ensure that your
home not only looks good, but it also has a healthy
glow.
Air Fresheners
Chemically based artificial fragrances, commonly
found in home air fresheners, can set off eye, nose,
and throat irritation in some people. Plus, the
standard-issue air freshener usually contains a
roundup of volatile organic compounds (VOC's), such
as acetone, isobutane, propane, petroleum
distillates, toluene, and sometime ozone. Besides
being harmful to the environment, VOC's can cause
lung, respiratory tract, and sensory
irritation.
Safer
Alternative:Essential Oils;
re allergic to
some plants, you might have a problem with
lavender, a commonly used natural fragrance.
Instead opt for natural cinnamon or vanilla.
Antibacterial disinfectants and
soaps
Antibacterial disinfectants and
soaps made with triclosan can kill off harmless
bacteria, helping superbug strains to emerge that are
resistant to antibacterial chemicals, says
Bond.
Safer Alternative: Citrus
Oil
Some essential oils, including those
derived from lemons, grapefruit, and oranges, are
antiseptic and antiviral, so they'll be extra tough on
germs without encouraging resistant bacteria. One
caveat: d-limonene, a substance found in orange
peels, can cause severe allergic reactions in some
people. When in doubt, use hot water and soap to kill
germs, and let your countertops air dry.
Bathtub cleaners and scrubs
The
ingredient monoethanolamine (MEA) is often found in
bathtub cleaners and is also common in everything
from shampoo to soap; studies show that a dash of
MEA can irritate skin and eyes.
Safer
Alternative: Sodium Carbonate
The
mineral in what is also known as washing soda
(available in the laundry section of your grocery
store) is a natural abrasive that gives you scrubbing
power to remove soap scum without toxins.
